Schooner Quinnipiack Crew Positions (2008 Season)
The S/V Quinnipiack is a traditionally rigged tall ship operated by
Schooner Inc. Experience in marine education and sailing, with an emphasis on hands on learning, are a plus. Teach navigation,
simple machines, water chemistry, points of sail, piloting, and marine history. Seasonal live aboard positions are available for the
following crew positions.
Relief Captain
The Relief Captain reports to the Executive Captain and is responsible for working with the crew to conduct educational sails, public
sails and charters. Actively assists in the promotion of Schooner's mission and program operations to the general public.
First Mate/Watch Officer/Educator
The First Mate/Watch Officer/Educator position is a full-time seasonal position aboard the S/V Quinnipiack. This position reports
directly to the Executive Captain. This position is responsible for supervising crew and volunteers, general boat operations,
schedules, and serves as a hands-on educator.
Summer Deckhand/Educator
The Summer Deckhand/Educator position is a full-time summer position aboard the S/V Quinnipiack. This position is responsible for general boat
operations and maintenance and serves as a hands-on educator.
Schooner Inc Staff Positions (2008 Season)
Camp Director
Under the supervision of the Director of Education, the Camp Director is a seasonal position responsible for preparing for and implementing
Summer Camp. The Camp Director is responsible for daily compliance with all State Licensing standards and requirements as well as the
requirements of Schooner Inc. Pay commensurate with experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create and maintain a safe and productive learning environment for both staff and campers
- Work with Director of Education to finalize camp frameworks and organize/purchase/inventory supplies
- Coordinate, create (as necessary), and implement camp training with Director of Education
- Oversee Program Coordinator design of additional/alternate activities for camps
- Supervise Summer Camp staff members and organize/run weekly camp staff meetings
- Communicate with parents and campers
- Maintain daily compliance with Summer Camp Licensure requirements
- Adhere to any Schooner Inc reporting requirements (accidents, petty cash, and payroll)
- Have a positive attitude!
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum age: 21
- 16 or more weeks administrative or supervisory experience in an organized camp
- Comfortable in water environment and in good physical condition to spend the day outside
- Knowledgeable about the marine environment (collegiate coursework/experience preferred)
- Able to work Monday-Friday 7:30 am-5:00 pm (plus one later day for weekly meeting and additional hours as needed) with reliable transportation
- Able to communicate effectively with parents and campers as well as other staff members
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Marine Science, Environmental Science, Education, or other related field
- Experience teaching/interacting with children in grades preK-12
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification
Terms of Employment:
- Camp preparation time: 40 hours pre-training
- Training: June 30 through July 3 - 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
- Camp: July 7 through August 22, Monday through Friday - ~48 hrs/wk - 7:30 am - 5:00 pm
- Pay rate is ~$10 per hour, dependent on qualifications

Head Instructor
Under the supervision of the Director of Education, the Head Instructor is responsible for hiring and training instructors, and
conducting of sail-training related activities. Teaches leadership skills both on the water and in the classroom and supervises
summer program activities on fleet of sailboats. Also assists in marketing, fundraising and developing community contacts as needed.
Available Position: Opti Sailors (grades 4-5; 1 position)
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implements program goals and objectives and carry out directives
- Assist in developing course curriculum for youth lessons
- Supervise all participants on the water
- Maintain a resource library of US Sailing books and videos to be used in class
- Maintain excellent relationship with community groups and schools
- Responsible for general maintenance and storage of Sail New Haven fleet
- Assess programs through documentation of written, verbal and observational evaluations
- Coordinates with the Executive Captain on boat safety and boat repairs and maintenances
- Assists in administrative functions and activities
Qualifications/Certifications:
- Minimum age: 21
- Knowledge of sail education theory, teaching techniques and curricula for youth
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Prior experience in running similar sailing programs
- CT Safe Boating License, US Sailing Level One Certification, Launch License, USCG Six pack license
- CPR and First Aid Certificate & Red Cross Lifesaving Certification
Terms of Employment:
- Camp Preparation Time: 20 hours pre-training
- Training: June 30 through July 3 - 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
- Camp: July 7 through August 15, Monday through Friday - 45 hrs/wk - 7:30 am - 4:30 pm
- Pay rate is ~$10 per hour, dependent on qualifications

Program Coordinator
The Program Coordinator is a seasonal employee with the Schooner Inc summer science and sailing programs. The
Program Coordinator works closely with the Camp Director to refine and teach the summer program curriculum on
the shore based programs. This position supervises Sr. Counselors and Jr. Counselors.
Available Position:
- Sea Sprites (grades 1 - 2; 1 position);
- Sound Explorers (grades 3-4; 1 position);
- Opti Sailors (grades 4-5; 1 position);
- Sea Pirates (grades 4-5; 1 position)
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create a safe and productive learning environment for both staff and campers
- Coordinate, create (as necessary), and implement all activities within a specific summer program
- Supervise Sr. Counselor and Jr. Counselor staff members
- Supervise all health and emergency related issues
- Communicate with parents
- Participate in all training and weekly meetings
- Complete any Schooner Inc reporting requirements including Summer Camp Licensure compliance and program equipment/supply maintenance
- Have a positive attitude!

- Knowledgeable about the marine environment (college-level coursework in Marine Science or Marine Biology preferred, but not required)

- Able to be a good role model for campers in both attitude and actions
- CPR/First Aid is required (preference for those who already have certification, training will be provided for those that do not)
- Lifeguard Certification is preferred

Senior Counselor
The Senior Counselor is a seasonal employee at the Schooner Inc summer marine science programs and works closely with the Program Coordinator
to implement summer programs.

- Sound Explorers (grades 3-4; 2 positions)
- Sea Pirates (grades 5-6; 1 position)
- Opti Sailors (grades 4-5; 2 positions)
Duties and Responsibilities:

- Assist Program Coordinator in coordinating and implementing all activities within a specific summer camp program (including teaching, leading, and/or supervising activities)
- Participate in Emergency Action Plan for all health and emergency related issues
- Assist Program Coordinator with daily tasks as needed

Senior Instructor
Under the supervision of the Head Instructor, the Senior Instructor is responsible for attendance and participation
in all sail-training related activities, including classroom activities. Senior Instructor is the lead instructor, in the
absence of the Head Instructor, in teaching leadership and sailing skills on the water and in the classroom.
Available Position:
- Opti Sailors (grades 4-5; 2 positions)
- Learn to Sail - Jr/Adv (grades 9 - 12; 3 positions)
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in the implementation of course curriculum for adult and youth programs, including rainy day activities
- Contribute to the documentation of written, verbal, and observational evaluations through the Program Coordinator
- Be familiar with and aid in the maintenance of a resource library of US Sailing books and videos to be used in the classroom
- Assists in maintaining the fleet of sailboats under the guidance of the Head Instructor
- Additional duties as assigned by the Head Instructor
Qualifications/Certifications:
- Minimum age: 21
- Prior experience instructing in a similar sailing program
- CT Safe Boating License
- Have one of the following sailing certifications: US Sailing Level One Certification, US Sailing Counselor Training, or American Red Cross Basic Sailing Course (Start Sailing Right)
- CPR and First Aid Certificate required
- Red Cross Lifesaving Certification required
- Previous experience instructing individuals of all ages and abilities
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills
