History of Schooner Inc
Schooner Inc was incorporated in 1975 by a small group of people concerned about the health of Long Island Sound, who believed that the Sound could be protected through public awareness and education programs. Since then, Schooner Inc has taught hundreds of thousands of people about the importance of Long Island Sound and their impact on this vital ecosystem through hands-on marine science and sailing programs that actively engage participants in the learning process enabling them to understand scientific concepts and environmental issues through real world experiences. From the beginning, Schooner Inc has used boats as a means of getting participants out on Long Island Sound to experience this vital ecosystem firsthand. Schooner Inc's first boat was the Trade Wind, a 57-ft Alden designed schooner. By 1980, in need of a bigger boat, the organization bought the J.N. Carter, a 66-ft "bugeye" ketch. The J.N. Carter was in turn replaced by the Janet May (renamed Quinnipiack) in 1990. Over the years, Schooner Inc has included other boats in its fleet for research projects, summer programs and watershed studies. In addition to teaching programs on its boats, Schooner Inc has also developed school programs for shore sites and the classroom. All school programs have been correlated with the science objectives defined in the Connecticut Science Frameworks. In addition, summer day camp programs offer children a week full of outdoor adventures, and public sails and charters allow the whole family to experience Long Island Sound on board the Quinnipiack. |
